I’ve a big fan of Cafe Gratitude in Los Angeles. It’s all organic, soy-free, and with lots of raw options. Granted, you’re about to enter into a sea of Birkenstock wearing, granola crunching, unintentional dread styling vegans, but you just have to embrace it. And lots of people have done just that.
Once you’ve made it to the top of the list and seated, you’re seated by a doe-eyed overly enthused server and left with the question of the day. At my most recent visit, the fitting “What are you grateful for?” Um, speedy service and competent servers.
If you’re new to the vegan experience, I would not start here. Between the hippy-dippy titles for each dish and the overuse of kale, it can be overwhelming. But for the adventurous vegans out there, the next time you take a trip over to the commune check out some of my favorite dishes:
I AM BONITA
Rice or quinoa black beans, salsa fresca, avocado and nacho cheese topped with pumpkin seeds served with two corn tortillas
*You know I love anything Mexican, and this is a fresh take on it.
I AM GROUNDED
Garlic roasted red potatoes served with your choice of our spicy nacho cheese or homemade chipotle ketchup
*This is a naughty dish, but oh so good.
I AM MAGICAL
Homemade veggie burger on an organic whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and spicy chipotle ketchup. Served with a side salad
*This has gluten, but it’s truly amazing.
I AM TRANSFORMED
Two organic corn tacos with sautéed seasonal vegetables, guacamole, black beans, salsa fresca and cashew nacho cheese. Served with a side salad
*More mexican! Heaven!
I AM FORTIFIED
Sautéed seasonal vegetables & kale, brown rice or quinoa, topped with your choice of sauce: sesame-ginger, garlic-tahini, red pepper harissa
*This is my go-to when I can’t make up my mind.
I AM WHOLE
Macrobiotic bowl with sea vegetables, stewed adzuki beans, raw kale, carrots , house-made red cabbage kim chee and sea whip and black sesame seed gomasio with your choice of quinoa or local brown rice, tahini-garlic sauce and teriyaki almonds
I AM LUSCIOUS
Almond milk, figs, dates, raw cacao and vanilla bean smoothie
*Even just reading this is making my mouth water.
I AM COOL
Mint chocolate chip milkshake with Vitamineral green and raw cacao nibs
*If you love yourself, order this.
I AM ADORING
TIRAMISU, Nut flour cake soaked in espresso with vanilla “whipped cream” & chocolate frosting
*Do yourself a favor here.
Warning, avoid the coffee. Truly an assault on your taste buds.
They have a great patio.
One of the better dinner ambiance options in the vegan world. Still not great, but better.
Waiting, the place is always packed.
Sometimes the airy vegans can be a little much.
